Families Are Always Connected

I recently paid a visit to my brother and his family in Victoria, BC.  He is suffeciently far away that I don’t get to see him very often.  In an average year I might see him twice for a total of about six hours.  This isn’t a new thing for me as my brother joined the Navy (first university at Royal Roads and RMC) right out of highschool.  He hasn’t been a regular fixture in my day-to-day life for a long time.   It goes without saying that I miss him but I didn’t realize how much until my recent visit.

A week ago I spent the weekend with Thomas, Laurie and a little bit of time with the girls, Jessica, Samantha and Alex.  it wasn’t an overly special weekend in that I did what they were going to do anyway, except for the lovely dinner at Sooke Harbour House, thanks!.   The rest of the time I tagged along on the dog walks, the karate tournement and my team kicked ass when playing Scene It on Sunday night.   What we did wasn’t special but the time we spent together was and that’s the way it is with families.

It does matter how far away your family is or how often you see them, they are always family. Being with family feels different somehow. I’m not sure why. Maybe it is those little things that don’t need to be said. Or maybe it’s those experiences that only someone in your family can relate to. I don’t know what it is but I do know it’s special.
